Early Life

Laila Ali was born Laila Amaria Ali on December 30, 1977, in Miami Beach, Florida, United States. She is the daughter of the boxer, Muhammad Ali and his third wife Veronica Porche Ali.

She obtained a business degree from California’s Santa Monica College.

Career

Laila owned a nail salon before she started boxing at the age of 18.

She made her professional debut on October 8, 1999, in a match with April Fowler of Michigan City, Indiana. Ali knocked out Fowler at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino on the Oneida Indian Nation in Verona, New York.

She won her second match against Shadina Pennybaker by a TKO with only 3 seconds left on the clock.

Ali fought with Jacqui Frazier on June 8, 2001, and won by a majority judge’s decision in eight rounds. The match became the first main event pay-per-view match between two women.

She was away from the boxing scene for a year and came back on June 7, 2002, to beat Shirvelle Wiliams in a six-round decision.

On August 17, 2002, Ali won the IBA title with a second-round knockout if Suzette Taylor. She retained that title and unified the crown by adding the WIBA and IWBF belts with an eight-round TKO win over her division’s other world champion, Valerie Mahfood.

She retained her wod title knocking out Nikki Epilon on July 17, 2004. She added the IWBF Light Heavyweight title to her record after beating Gwendolyn O’Neil by a knockout in three rounds.

She beat Erin Toughill in a round three to stay undefeated and won the World Boxing Council title on June 11, 2005, which became an addition to defending her WIBA crown. She also became the second woman to win a WBC title after Jackie Nava.

She has also recorded victory over likes of Anne Wolfe, Shelley Burton, and of course her last professional fight with O’Neil. She retired from professional boxing in 2007

Ali made an appearance in an episode of The Jersey called “Bad Girl”, in 2000. She followed up with an appearance on the UPN sitcoms One on One and Girlfriends, in 2002.

She was a participant in season four of the television show Dancing with the Stars in mid-2007.

As a television personality, she hosted the revival of American Gladiators alongside Hulk Hogan. She also joined the CBS team as a contributing correspondent on The Early Show. She became a co-host Everyday Health with Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca, in 2012.

Ali has been the host of the DIY series Home Made Simple on the Oprah Winfrey Network since 2017, and also voiced herself in the Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? episode “The Crown Jewel of Boxing”, in 2020.
