Early Life
Born Ko Itakura on January 27, 1997 in Yokohama, Japan.
Career
Ko Itakura began his career at the youth level with Kawasaki Frontale in 2006. He made his senior debut for the club in 2015 and won the 2017 Japanese Championship.
He went on loan to Vegalta Sendai in 2018 and joined the English club Manchester City in 2019 of which he was immediately loaned to Eredivisie club Groningen until the summer of 2020. He also stayed with Groningen with an extra year agreed by both clubs.
He moved on a season long loan to the German side Schalke 04 on August 19, 2021, with an option to make the move permanent for £5 million.
He signed permanently for Borussia Monchengladbach on July 2, 2022 for a transfer fee of £5 million. He scored his first goal for the club in a match against Augsburg on August 19, 2023.
At the international scene, Itakura represented Japan at the 2017 U-20 World Cup where he played 2 matches as a defensive midfielder. He was called up to the senior team for the 2019 Copa America of which he made his debut against Uruguay on June 20, 2019.
He was called up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November 2022 and played all the group stage matches.
