Early Life
Wataru Endo was born on February 9, 1993 in Totsuka-ku, Yokohama, Japan.
Career
Wataru Endo began his career at the youth level with Shonan Bellmare in 2008. He made his debut for the senior team in 2010.
He joined Urewa Red Diamonds in 2016 and also played for Sint-Truiden from 2018-2020. He was on loan at VFB Stuttgart from 2019 to 2020 before the contract was made permanent.
Endo joined Liverpool on a four-year deal on August 18, 2023 for a reported fee of £16 million as he became the second Japanese to play for Liverpool after Takumi Minamino. He made his debut for the club in a match against Bournemouth and scored his first goal in a 5-1 victory against Toulouse in the Iefa Europa League.
At the international scene, Endo represented Japan at the under-19, and under-23 levels. He made his senior debut the Japanese team in a 2-1 defeat to North Korea on August 2, 2015. He was included in the Japan squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup but ended up not playing any of their matches. He was also part of the squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar where the team reached the round of 16 before they lost to Croatia on penalties. He was eventually named captain of the team in June 2023.
