Early Life
Born William Paul Troost-Ekong on September 1, 1993 in Haarlem, Netherlands. He is of mixed ethnicity as his father, Mr Ekong, is a Nigerian, from Akwa Ibom State and his mother Eleanore Troost is a Dutch. He has two siblings, Emily and Everest.
He went to Hockerill Anglo-European College for his secondary education.
Career
Troost-Ekong began his career at the youth level with Fulham in 2008 and went through the youth academy of Tottenham Hotspur.
He made his professional career in Netherlands with FC Groningen and FC Dordrecht.
He joined Belgian club KAA Gent in July 2015 and went on loan immediately to the Norwegian club FK Haugesund. He later joined Turkish club Bursapor in July 2017.
He moved to the Italian club Udinese on August 17, 2018 and made 35 league appearances in his debut season for the club. He joined Watford on a five-year contract on September 29, 2020. He scored his first goal for the club in a 3-2 victory against Coventry City on November 7, 2020.
He went on loan to Salernitana on January 24, 2023, with an option to buy at the end of the season. He joined the Greek club PAOK in 2023.
At the international level, Troost-Ekong represented represented Netherland at the under-19, and under-20 levels before representing Nigeria at the under-23 level.
He made his debut for the Nigerian national team in a qualifying match against Chad on June 13, 2015. He was part of the squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and helped his team secure a place in the semi-finals after scoring an 89th minute winner against South Africa. He became the captain of the Nigerian national team and went on to represent the country at the 2021 AFCON and 2023 AFCON.
