Jessica Pimentel ( born September 20, 1982) is an American actress and singer. She came to prominence for her role as Maria Ruiz on the Netflix drama series Orange is the New Black. She is the lead vocalist of the New York based metal band Alekhine’s Gun.
Jessica is a multi-instrumentalist, she can play the guitar, violin and the keyboard.

Early Life
Jessica Pimentel was born on September 20, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York to parents from La Romana, Dominican Republic and immigrated to New York.
She is the only child of her parents of which they divorced when she was barely six years of age. She grew up as Christian and began practicing Budhist as an adult.
She is a Latina of mixed heritage such as Native American, Irish and Italian.
She attended New York’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
Career
Pimentel began acting in high school while playing Juliet in a touring production of Romeo and Juliet. She also got other small roles in movies and television shows.
She played the role of Angelique Domenguez in the 2008 film Pride and Glory and was cast as Floyd in four episodes of Person of Interest, in 2014.
Pimentel came to limelight in 2013 for her role as Maria Ruiz on the Netflix comedy drama series Orange is the New Black. She was a guest star for the first four seasons and eventually became part of the regular vast in season 5.
She had passion for music at a tender age of two where she trained as lassical violinist. She also learned to play other music instruments such as the electric bass, guitar and Keyboards.
She became the lead vocalist and recording guitarist for the New York based metal band Alekhine’s Gun. She recorded numerous songs with the band Black Heart Sutra, and sings in the Los Angeles based meta band Brujeria.
She is a featured vocalist in projects by Black heart Sutra, Brick by Brick and Origin. Her violin playing was featured on the track “Ormen’s Offer” by Swedish Electrogoth band Valhall.

Aside acting and music, Pimentel is also a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, logic, debate and meditation in the Gelugpa Tradition of the Dalai Lama and was trained and studied closely under the former abbot of Sera Mey Monastery, H.E. Sermey Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tharchin.
