He is said to be one of the most influential rappers of all time, having sold more than 75 million albums to date.

He never lived to reach his full potential as he died from a gunshot on September 13, 1996. He won the American Music Awards and Soul Train Awards.

Early Life

Tupac ‘2pac’ Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks on the 16th of June 1971 in Eastern Harlem, New York, the United States, to parents Billy Garland and Afeni Shakur. By the time 2pac turned five years old, his father had lost contact with Afeni. Afeni gave birth to Sekiya with Mutulu Shakur.

He had an older stepbrother, Mopreme ‘Komani’ Shakur, and a half-sister named Sekyiwa Shakur.

2pac grew up with his loved ones and eventually settled in Baltimore (Maryland) in 1986. He attended Baltimore School for the arts and studied acting, poetry, and ballet.

He later took to selling drugs on the streets and became part of gang culture, which helped him lyrically.

Career

Tupac ‘2pac’ was discovered by Leila Steinberg, who got him signed by Atron Gregory, manager of the rap group, Digital Underground. Atron secured a gig for Tupac as a back dancer for the hip hop group, Digital Underground, in 1990.

2pac as fondly called made his recording debut in January 1991, with the song “Same Song” in the movie Nothing But Trouble. He later made an appearance on the album, Sons of the P by Digital Underground.

Gregory eventually took over as the band manager and got Tupac a deal with Interscope Records and released his solo debut album “2Capalypse Now”. The album is classic one which depicted his individual struggles.

Tupac complained about how people misunderstood his lyrics. He made mentioned that he had always wanted to rap about the things that affected Black People.

He was cast in the crime movie, Juice, in 1992 as he joined the likes of rapper-turned actors Ice Cube and Ice-T.

He formed the group Thug Life in late 1993 and produced various albums. His album, All Eyes on Me sold up to five million copies in its first year of release and also debuted at number one on the Billboard Charts.

Tupac featured in the romantic film  Poetic Justice alongside Janet Jackson. He also starred in Bullet, Gridlock’d and Gang Related.

Tupac came through with his fifth and final studio album, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, in August 1996 as released under the stage name Makaveli.

Personal Life

Tupac ‘2pac’ Shakur got married to Keisha Morris while in prison and later got involved with Jada Pinketh Smith, now Will Smith’s wife. 2pac has a daughter and the only child named Jaycee Shakur.

Controversies

Tupac served 15 days in jail for assaulting the director Allen Hughes in early 1994.

He was shot multiple times in November 1994 by two young black men in the lobby of Manhattan recording studio, Quad. He thought the rapper The Notorious B.I.G was behind the shootings.

He released the song Hit ‘Em Up, directed toward Biggie and Sean Combs, in June 1996 and three months after, he was killed.

Tupac was in Las Vegas, where he was shot on September 7, 1996, of which he died six days after the incident.
