Tosin Oshinowo (born May 4, 1980) is a popular and talented Nigerian architect, designer, curator, author and creative entrepreneur. She came to prominence for her works as the architecture of Maryland Mall in Lagos State, Nigeria.

She is also known for her consultancy firm, Cmdesign Atelier and as the founder of Lifestyle furniture line, Ile Ila (House of Lines).

She has worked on other numeorus projects across the globe and has been featured in several publications of special note Harpers Bazaar Interiors and Elle Decor Nee York.

Early Life

Tosin Oshinowo was born on May 4, 1980 in Lagos where she also grew up. She later left for the United Kingdom at the age of 16 to study. She is originally from the western part of Nigeria.

She obtained a degree in Architecture from Kingston College London, and her masters degree in Urban designs from Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

She is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and a registered architect with Architects Registration Council Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON).

Career

Tosin developed passion for being an architecture at a very tender age. She discovered her creativity in technical drawing and ability to understand drawings at the age of twelve.

She got more exposure to site works by accompanying her father to his site where he was buiding his retirement home.

She began to work in Skidmore Owning and Merill’s LLP London after her education in 2007. She later worked in Metropolitan Architecture Rotterdam from January 2008 to January 2009, where she became part of a team of six that designed the proposed double-decker Forth Mainland Bridge which is meant to link Ajah and Ikorodu in Lagod State.

She trained in Europe and had few years of practice before she returned to Nigerian in 2009 and joined James Cubitt Architects, where she worked on the Nigerian Liquefield gas (NLNG) projects as the lead architect.

Having worked with James Cubitt for Four years, Tosin eventually incorporated her own Architecture firm, CmDesign Atelier in 2012. Her firm is the brain behind the design of the Maryland Mall in Lagos.

She also became the convener of Sho-n-Tell (from 2009 to 2014), an annual event series that creates a platform for both the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Lagos to share the same studio with practicing professionals, for the main purpose of enhancing the knowledge of the students with professionals wealth of experience.

Tosin Oshinowo founded the contemporary Nigerian lifestyle furniture, Ile Ila (House of Lines) in 2017. The furniture designs of Ile Ila are known for its bold and colorful expressions. Her collections are handmade in Lagos which incorporates traditional West African fabrics and Nigerian teak wood. She uses each design to celebrate the Yoruba culture where she infused West African upholstery and hard woods in her pieces.

The brand has also featured Nigerian music acts like Adekunle Gold and Chidinma in different campaigns as muse.

As an author, she worked on the article “the reclamation of public space in Lagos” as published in October 2012. She also began a column in 2017 for Omneka online called the Afromodernist: Identity, Architecture & Sexuality, a bimonthly article which explores cultural issues that deals with African identity in a modern context.

Tosin Oshinowo won the Architect of the Year at the City People Real Estate Awards (2017). She was awarded the Lord’s Achievers for creativity, in celebration of World Achievers Day (March 2019).

She was also nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year at the EbonyLife TV Sisterhood Awards.
