Early Life
Obongjayar was born Steven Umoh on October 16, 1989 in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. She is from a christian background. She was raised by her grandmother and later lived with her mother in England.
Obongjayar had her tertiary education at a University in Norwich.
Career
Obongjayar developed interest in music at a tender age with inspiration from listening to the likes of Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Ciara and Eminem.
He came through by publishing his music on SoundCloud and quickly caught the attention of XL Recordings executive Richard Russell who later asked Obongjayar to make contribution to his Everything is Recorded project.
He released his first EP “Home” in 2016 and also followed up with another EP titled “Bassey”. He made contribution to Richard Russell’s 2017 EP, Close But Not Quiet, and also featured on Detroit Rapper Danny Brown’s fifth studio album “U Know What I’m Sayin? in 2019.
He released a third EP, Sweetness, in collaboration with Sarz, in 2021. He also featured on rapper Little Simz’s studio album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert on the fourth single “Point and Kill”.
He released his debut studio album “Some Nights I Dream of Doors” in 2022. He released the lead single off the album titled “Message in a Hammer” which was accompanied with a music video.
