Folarin Falana popularly known as Falz, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper, actor and television presenter born on October 27, 1990.

Falz music style is a blend of comic lyrics with contemporary hip hop in a faux of Yoruba accent.

Early Life & Background

Falz who was born and raised in Lagos state, originally hails from Ekiti state part of Nigeria.

He is the only child of his parents. Falz’s father, Femi Falana (Born December 30, 1958), is a popular legal practitioner and human rights activist while his mother, Funmi Falana is a lawyer and women’s rights activist.

He attended St Leo’s Catholic Primary School, Ikeja for his primary education and Olashore International school, Osun state for his secondary education.

He studied law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom before he returned back to Nigeria to attend Nigerian Law School Abuja and called to bar in February 2012.

Career

Falz started his career while in secondary school where he formed a group called “The School Boys” with his friends before he came through professionally as a music artist in 2009.

He released a single in 2011 titled “Waz Up Guy” and followed it up with “High Class” and “Currency” which helped him stand firm in the Nigerian music industry. He further released his first studio album “Wazup Guy” in 2014.

Falz rose to fame for his smash hit single “Marry Me” which enlist the vocals of the Nigerian diva, Yemi Alade and Poe and followed it up with another single titled “Ello Bae”.

He dropped his second studio album “Stories That Touch” on November 17, 2015.

He release his joint studio album “Chemistry” along with Simi on October 27, 2016. The EP comprises of 7 tracks as produced by Sess.

He also released a third album titled “27” on October 27, 2017 to celebrate his 27th birthday. The ’27’ album comprises of 17 tracks which include hit singles such as “Bahd Baddo Baddest”, “Something Light”, “Wehdone Sir” and so on. It also features A-list musicians including Davido, Olamide, Ycee, Wande Coal, Maleek Berry, Burna Boy and Terry Apala. Producers on the album include Sess, Maleek Berry and Studio Magic.

Falz released a music video for the song “This Is Nigeria” in May 2018, as inspired by American actor and comedian, Donald Glovers (also known as Childish Gambino). The video created a lot of controversies online as it highlights the many challenges Nigeria is facing such as bribery and corruption.

The talented rapper also released his fourth album “Moral Instruction” in 2019. The album comprises of 9 tracks with features from Demmie Vee, Chillz and Sess on the production.

Aside music, Falz is also an actor with his first role as Segun in Funke Akindele‘s “Jenifa’s Diary” television series. He has also starred in numerous movies such as Couple of Days, 10 Days in Sun City and so on.

He also has a clothing line named “Ello Bae” clothing.
