Cody Mathes Gakpo was born on May 7, 1999, in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and grew up in the district of Stratum. His father was born in Togo and has Ghanaian ancestry, while his mother is Dutch.
Career
Cody Gakpo began his football career at the youth level with PSV and later moved to Jong PSV. He made his professional debut in the Eerste Divisie for Jong PSV on November 4, 2016 in match against Helmond Sport.
He made his first team debut for PSV in a 3-1 win against Feyenord on February 25, 2018.
He had an amazing performance in the Eredivisie with seven goals and many assists in 25 league games in the 2019-20 season.
Gakpo scored his first brace for PSV in the 2020-21 Eredivisie season, in a 3-1 victory against Groningen, on September 13, 2020. He finished the season with 11 goals in 29 appearances. He also scored the winning goal for PSV in a 2-1 victory against Ajax in the 2022 KNVB Cup Final.
He signed a six-year deal with the English club Liverpool in December 2022.
Gakpo who was eligible to play for Ghana, Togo, and the Netherlands, choose to represent the Netherlands at the under-18, under-19, under-20, and under-201 levels before being called up for the UEFA Euro 2020. He made his debut in a match against North Macedonia, where he came on as a substitute for Frenkie de Jong at the 79th minute. He scored the first goal for the Netherlands in a 2-0 win over Senegal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
