Cillian Murphy is an award winning Irish actor, singer and songwriter who came to prominence as the lead singer for the rock band The Sons of Mr Green Genes.

He began his career as an actor before he delved into music. He is well known for his appearance in both short and independent films.

He has lots of exciting roles to his credit such as Darren in the drama Disco Pigs and in the zombie horror 28 days later.

Murphy won an Irish film and Television Award for Best Actor and the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Actor.

Early Life

Cillian Murphy was born in Cork, Ireland on the 25th day of May 1976. His father, Brendan, worked for the Department of Education and skills while his mother, was a French teacher.

He grew up with his two younger sisters, Sile and Orla and a younger brother, Paidi, in Ballintemple, Cork.

He was raised catholic and also went to a Catholic secondary school Presentation Brothers College. He briefly studied Law at the University College Cork (UCC) in 1996.

Career

Murphy began writing songs at a tender age of 10 and began performing while in secondary school. He was encouraged to pursie acting but he only had his mind on becoming a rockstar.

He began to sing and played the guitar alongside his brother Paidi, in his early 20s. There were known as the band Mr Green Genes and were offered five albim deal by Acid Jazz record of which they rejected as Paidi was still in school.

Murphy started acting professionally with his debut on stage where he starred in as a Volatile teenager in Disco Pigs. Since then he featured in numerous theatre productions such as Much Ado About Nothing and The Country Boy.

He started to feature in independednt films like On the Edge and also in short films like Watchmen.

He made appearance in a theatre production of Neil Labute’s The Shape of Things in 2002 and the same year, he plated lead role in Danny Boyle’s horror film 28 Days Later

He made appearance in the stage production of Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Edinburgh International Festival and featured in Intermissiin in 2003. The same year, he had a minor role in the Hollywood drama Cold Mountain and also starred in Girl with a Pearl Earring alongside Colin Firth and Scarlett Johnson.

In 2005, he made appearance as Dr. Jonathan in Batman Begins  played the role of Jackson Rippner in Wes Craven’s thriller, Red Eye and also played the role of Patrick Braden in the comedy drama, Breakfast on Pluto.

Murphy featured in The Wind That Shakes The Barley in 2006 and for his amazing effort and intriguing role, he was presented with the Actor of the year by GQ magazine.

The year 2007 saw Murphy featured in the science fiction film, Sunshine and the romantic comedy, Watching the Detectives.

In 2011, he played the lead role in the horror film, Retreat and in the science fiction film, In Time, alongside Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake.

He featured in Dark Knight Rises and had a supporting role in the British independent film, Broken, in 2012. He played the role if Thomas Shelby in the BBC television series, Peaky Blinders in 2013 and followed up with a role in the drama Aloft in 2014. 

Ever sinve he rose to fame, he has starred in other films like Free Fire, In the Heart of the Sea, Dunkirk and many others.

Personal Life

Cillian Murphy married his long time girlfriend, Yvonne McGuinness in 2004 and their union is blessed with twi children, two sons named Malachy and Aran who were born in December 2005 and July 2007 respectively.
