Tate Rosner McRae (born July 1, 2003) with the stage name as Tate McRae, is a popular Canadian singer, songwriter and dancer who became known after emerging as first Canadian finalist on the American reality TV show, So You Think You Can Dance. She gained more exposure for her hit single “You Broke Me First” and also broke the record for the most streamed Female EP of 2021 on Spotify for her extended projects “Too Young To Be Sad”.

Early Life

Tate McRae was born on July 1, 2003 in Calgary, Canada. She is of mixed ethnicity, as her Canadian father is of Scottish descent while her mother is from Germany.

Her family relocated to Oman when she was barely 4 years old. She lived there for three years while being taught dance lessons by her mother. There, she attended The American International School Muscat.

She also went to Western Canada High School before going back to online school because of her tight schedule.

Career

McRae began getting dance lessons from her mother at the age of 4 and the age of 6, she began doing recreational dance training. She trained more intensively in dance at the age of 8 where she competed with Drewitz Dance Productions and when she was 11, she had trained in all styles of dance at YYC Dance Project, which is a dance company owned by her mother. She also got involved in ballet training at the School of Alberta Ballet, the training school for the Alberta Ballet Company.

She began her career as a voice actress for the Lelaloopsy franchise in 2013.

Her dancing career took a new height while dancing competitively at various events. She emerged as finalist at the New York City Dance Alliance’s 2014 National Gala and was awarded the Best Female dancer award at the 2015 Dance Awards.

She danced in the music video for Walk Off the Earth’s single “Rule The World” and performed on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in April 2016.

Tate performed at the 2016 Teen Choice awards as a finalist from the SYTYCD cast and also performed on the Ellen DeGeneres show in October 2016.

She performed a dance to Demi Livato’s song “Tell Me You Love Me” in November 2017 and also danced in the music video for the song “Just Say When” by the American rock band “Nothing More”.

McRae has been able to develop her passion with musical influences from the likes of Dua Lipa, Post Malone and dance performances inspirations from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.

For her music career, she got signed with RCA records in 2019 and released her first EP “All The Things I Never Said” in January 2020. The EP comprises of 5 tracks with the lead single “Tear Myself Apart” co-written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

He released lots of exciting singles in 2020 from “You Broke Me First” to “Vicious” and “Lied To Me”. Her success with “You Broke Me First” got her a publishing deal with Sony/ATV. She was named as an artist to watch in 2021 by the likes of Amazon Music, Pandora, The Independent, Uproxx and NME.

She released her second extended project “Too Young To Be Sad” in March 2021. Which include songs like “Bad Ones”, “Slower” and “Rubberband”.

McRae came through with the song “Feel Like Shit” in November 2021, as a lead single off her debut studio album which is expected to be released in 2022.

Tate McRae has also worked with the likes of Lil Mosey, Ali Gatie, Troye Sivan, Jeremy Zucker and many others.
