Early Life
Mowalola was born on March 25, 1995 in Lagos, to Nigerian parents who are fashion designers. Her father is the co-founder of men’s fashion label, Sofisticat, and her mother, Adenike Ogunlesi of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble specializes in women’s clothing. Her grandmother, Scottish moved to Nigeria after getting married to Ogunlesi’s grandfather in the 1960s.
She moved from Nigeria to attend all-girls Catholic boarding school in Surrey, England, at the age of 12.
She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion at Central Saint Martins – University of the Arts London. She also enrolled in the Master of Arts programme at Central Saint Martins but dropped out in 2018.
Career
Ogunlesi grew up around fashion as her both parents are fashion designers. She apllied for Fashion East, a nonprofit organization that supports young designers and gives them a platform to show at London Fashion Week.
She made her London Fashion Week debut in January 2019 through Fashion East and showed womenswear for the first time.
With her unique designs, she has attracted the attention of music artists such as Kanye West, Drake, Steve Lacy, and Solange.
She created outfits for Skepta’s “Pure Water” music video. She was part of the six designers approached by British Vogue to style Barbie dolls for the brand’s 60th anniversary.
However, a 10-year Yeezy Gap partnership with Mowalola was announced on June 26, 2020.
She was named by Elle as one of “10 Trailblaizing Women Changing The Future You Need to Know”, in October 2020. Others on the list include Koffee, Ngozi Onwurah, Simi Lindgren, Balanda Atis, Tobi Kyeremateng, Holly Fischer, Magdalene Abraha, Celeste and Margaret Busby.
