Lynn Whitfield was born on February 15, 1953, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. She is the eldest in a family of four children. Her mother Jean Smith Butler is a former president of the Louisiana Housing Finance Agency, and her father Dr Valerian Smith was a composer who wrote the musicals, The Supper and The Wake. Whitfield graduated from Howard University.
Career
Whitfield began acting professionally in 1981 with a role as Jill Thomas in the NBC serial drama Hill Street Blues. She followed up in 1983 with a role as Thelma Cleland in the comedy film Doctor Detroit. She also featured in the films Silverado, The Slugger’s Wife, and The Women of Brewster Place with Oprah Winfrey.
She came to th limelight for her role in The Josephine Baker Story. She also had a recurring role in the ABC legal drama Equal Justice, alongside Joe Morton. She made appearances in several television movies like Stompin at the Savoy, Vanessa Bell Calloway, State of Emergency, The Wedding, Taking The Heat, The Jasmine Guy.
Whitfield also had several supporting roles on television and films in the 2000s. She made appearances in Head of State, The Rebound, Madea’s Family Reunion, and Mama, I Want to Sing.
She appeared in the romantic comedy film Nappily Ever After, alongside Sanaa Lathan, in 2018. She starred on the Fox medical drama The Resident in 2019, and starred in the comedy film Vacation Friends in 2021.
