He began playing football at the age of 7 after his father Tihomir Gvardiol took him to Tresnjevka. He received an offer from Dinamo Zagreb which he accepted, and soon many top clubs started showing interest from Manchester City, Inter Milan, Roma, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, to Ajax and Lille.
Gvardiol has a style of play similar to that of David Alaba. He is a left-footed centre-back who can provide dangerous crosses into the box.

Career
Gvardiol made his debut for the Dinamo Zagreb senior team in a 4-2 win over Gorica, and made his second league appearance in a 1-0 victory against Inter Zapresic where he scored the only goal. He became the sixth youngest league scorer for Dinamo Zagreb after Alen Halilovic, Mateo Kovacic, Niko Kranjcar, Ante Coric, and Tin Jedvaj.
He signed for the German club side RB Leipzig on a five-year deal for €16 million, plus various add-ons. He later joined Manchester City in 2023.
He played for the U17, U-19, and U21 Croatian team before being called up to the senior team. He made his debut in a friendly match which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Belgium.
