Debra Anne Haaland (born December 2, 1960) popularly known as Deb Haaland, is an American politician activist and entrepreneur. She became known as the 54th United States Secretary of the interior. She also became the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary and the second to serve in the cabinet after republican former vice president and Kaw nation citizen Charles Curtis.

Early Life

Deb Haaland was born on December 2, 1960 in Winslow, Arizona.

Her mother, Mary Toya, an American woman, served in the United States Navy while her father, Major David ‘Dutch’ Haaland, a Norwegian Minnesotan, was an officer in the United States Marine Corps.

She has 4 siblings; three sisters and a brother.

She went to 13 public schools across the United States before her family settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She eventually graduated from Highland high school in Albuquerque and proceeded to University of Mew Mexico where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English and earned her Juris Doctor in Indian Law from the University of New Mexico school of law in 2006.

Deb became the first chairwoman elected to the Laguna development corporation board of directors, a laguna owned business which is created to strengthen the Laguna Community and its economy.

Political Career

Deb Haaland served as the state’s vote director for Native Americans in Barack Obama‘s 2012 presidential election campaign and from 2012 to 2013, she served as the chair of Democratic Party of Mew Mexico Native American Caucus. She was elected to a year two year term as the chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico in April 2015 and served as the U.S representative for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district from 2019 to 2021. She is an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo.
She came to prominence as the 54th United States Secretary of the interior.

Deb Haaland is a catholic. She has a daughter named Somah Haaland whom she raised on her own. She gave birth to her daughter 4 days after graduating from the University.
