Early Life
Andre Ayew was born Andre Morgan Rami Ayew on December 17, 1989, in Seclin, France, to Ghanaian parents Abedi Pele and Maha Ayew. His father Abedi Pele is a three-time African Footballer of the Year and played for Lille at the time of his birth.
He is of mixed ethnicity as his grandfather from his mother Maha’s side, Alhaji A.A Khadir, is Lebanese. His is the nephew of Kwame Ayew and Sola Ayew, who are also former international footballers. He has three siblings; two brothers, Ibrahim and Jordan, and a sister named Imani. Ibrahim and Jordan are also professional footballers who play for Europa in Gilbraltar and Crystal Palace respectively.
Career
Andre Ayew began his football career at the youth level with 1860 Munich and later played for Nania, where his father is the club chairman, in Accra, Ghana. He was promoted to the senior team and played professional football for two seasons before he left the club to join Marseille.
He signed a three-year contract with Marseille and made his professional debut for the club on August 15, 2007, in a 2-1 loss to Valenciennes, where he came on as a substitute in the 89th minute for Modeste M’bami.
He went on loan to the first-division club Lorient after being deemed surplus to requirements for the season with the arrival of strikers like Hatem Ben Arfa and Bakari Kone. While at Lorient, he was used by the manager Christian Gourcuff as one of the team’s important attackers alongside the likes of Kevin Gameiro and Fabrice Abriel. He eventually made his debut for Lorient in a goalless draw against Lyon, on August 16, 2018, and scored his first professional goal in a 1-1 draw with Sochaux, on September 27, 2008.
He joined the newly promoted Ligue 2 club Arles-avignon on loan for the 2009-10 season, and made his debut for the club on a 1-1 draw with Angers, on September 11, 2009.
He returned to Marseille after a successful campaign with Arles-avignon and signed a three-year contract extension on August 5, 2010. He scored his first goal in a 3-2 loss to Valenciennes and scored a double in a 3-0 win against his former club Arles-avignon.
He signed a four-year deal with English club Swansea City on a free transfer on June 10, 2015. He made his debut and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-2 draw against Chelsea on August 7, 2015.
He joined West Ham United on a three-year deal for a reported fee of £20.5 million on August 18, 2016, and returned to Swansea City for a reported fee of £18 million on January 31, 2018. He joined Fernabahçe on a season-long loan in July 2018.
He signed a two-year deal on a free transfer with the Qatar Stars League club Al Sadd FC on July 21, 2021.
Ayew who has dual citizenship with eligibility to represent both France and Ghana, decided to represent Ghana at the under-20 levels.
He was called up to the senior team in a friendly match against Senegal on August 21, 2007. He represented Ghana at the 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.
He also played the 2010 FIFA World Cup, 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, 2014 FIFA World Cup, 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, and 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
He was included in the 23-man squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He scored Ghana’s first goal in the competition in a 3-2 loss to Potugal.
