Amaka Osakwe is an award winning Nigerian fashion designer and creative director of the African based fashion label Maki Oh.
Osakwe was born in 1987 and of the Igbo tribe in Nigeria.
She obtained a BA in fashion studies at the Arts University Bournemouth.
Career
Amaka Osakwe founded Maki Oh in 2010 as a women’s wear fashion brand that fuses traditional African techniques with detailed contemporary construction.
Her brand is also known with the signature of using traditional Yoruba indigo-dyed textile popularly called ‘Adire’ while combining western silhouettes and native materials.
Maki Oh vision extends beyond physical beauty to a texture, layered and three-dimensional aesthetic, embodying the philosophies of sustainability, preservation, strength and complex simplicity.
The brand has been featured in New York Times, Business of Fashion, Elle Magazine, Vogue Magazine, The Financial Times, Paper Magazine, Glamour and many others.
Osakwe’s work has also been showcased at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Vitra Design Museum and the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery.
