Gowin Obaseki who took over from Adams Oshiomole as the governor of Edo state, was born on 1st July 1959 in Benin city, Edo state.
Educational Background
Godwin Obaseki had his primary education at St. Mattew’s Anglican primary School, Benin City and his secondary education at Egbosa Anglican Grammar school before proceeding to the University of Ibadan where he obtained his Bachelor Of Arts degree in Classics.
He also obatined a master’s degree in Finance and International business from the University of Colombia and Pace University in United States.
Career
Godwin Obaseki who started his career over 30 years ago has been able to established himself in the area of Investment banking, Asset Management, Securities Trading and public sector both in Nigeria and abroad.
He began in 1983 asa Stock broker with Capital Trust brokers limited lagos before he moved on to work with International merchant bank (an affiliate of First Chicago bank).
He also served as a project manager in AVC Funds Limited in 1988 and as such, he was the team leader of the core team that set up the two generation banks which reshape the banking system in Nigeria.
Between 1993 and 1995, he worked as a principal Finance Co. in New York and also founded the Afrinvest West Africa Limited (which was formerly known as Securities Transactions & Trust Company Limited, SEC Trust) as the pioneer managing director.
Mr. Obaseki is also the chairman of the Board of Directors of the firm which won the Bes Asset Mnagement Firm in Nigeria (2014) Award by the Wealth & Finance International Magazine Finance Awards.
Apart from Afrinvet, Godwin Obaseki also serves as an executive board member of several other private companies like Dorman Long Engineering Limited, Pillar Oil Limited, Seric Impianti International Limited.
He also served as the Chairman of the Edo State Government’s Economic and Strategy Team from March 17, 2009 till September 2016.
