The Surulere national stadium was commissioned in 1972 with a main bowl capacity of 45,000 and hosted the All Africa games in 1973 as well as the 1980 and 2000 Africa Nations Cup.
The National stadium used to be a magnificient and functional monument, a source of pride to the nation. According to the Ambode; "It is our strong conviction that this edifice should be revived and properly maintained. The Lagos state government is willing, ready and in the best position to take up this project to restore the facility to its place of pride in Africa."
